Program Elements

Mentoring

Many students in developing countries have big dreams for their future, but little inside knowledge on what is required to achieve success and develop a career. The 38degrees Program seeks to provide each student in the program with a mentor - that is, a mature, accomplished in-country contact. The mentoring element of the 38degrees Program is designed to foster the development of mutually beneficial relationships between mentor and partnered-student. It is also a crucial first step towards bridging the widening social gap between the rich and poor in developing countries. We seek to engage mentors who are dedicated towards keeping regular contact with partnered-students, who need someone to contribute to their individual goals and aspirations. This mentoring element provides an important support to buffer the core educational-partner function of the 38degrees Program and will help underpin the 38degrees Program’s continuing success and longevity. We hope that through this mentoring process, partnered-students will grow to become tomorrow’s leaders.

Private tuition

The 38degrees Program acknowledges that partnered-students live in some of the most disadvantaged areas of their respective countries. Their local towns may suffer disease epidemics, or a lack of basic resources (such as food, water and healthcare). The effect of this can be debilitating, with many students being forced to skip school due to illness or the need to earn income during school hours to supplement their family’s income.

We want to ensure that partnered-students have the best possible chance to succeed; thus we are developing a tutoring service for partnered-students. Each term, students will be able to have access to tutors and obtain valuable advice and hands-on assistance on ways to improve.

Continuity and community service

The 38degrees Program is designed to be a sustainable, long term, educational solution to breaking the cycle of poverty. Upon completion of high school, all partnered-students will be required to provide a minimum of three months service to the community by means of volunteering in a charitable institution.

During their final year of high school, partnered-students will report to a local charitable institution in either Kenya or Ghana to discuss how they wish to carry out this community service. In the case that the partnered-student completes further tertiary studies or vocational training, he or she will be required to provide a further six months of service to the community in the field of their studies (for example, a student who studied accounting can manage the accounts of an orphanage).

Our ultimate aspiration is that those students whose lives have been changed by the 38degrees Program will continue to assist their community and will one day themselves become educational-partners for other students in need.
